What IVF means

IVF stands for in vitro fertilisation. Eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. An embryo may then be transferred to the uterus. IVF is not a single appointment; it is a sequence of clinical and laboratory stages planned around the person receiving treatment.

The main stages

Protocols vary, but most IVF journeys include preparation, ovarian stimulation, monitoring, egg collection, laboratory fertilisation, embryo development and either embryo transfer or freezing. Medication supports several eggs to develop. Scans and sometimes blood tests help the team understand response and choose safe timing.

What IVF cannot promise
